Sleep Loss and It¡¯s Influences
Park Kee-Hyung

Abstract
Sleep deprivation is an extremely common event in today¡¯s society, and it results from a wide range of factors, including medical conditions, sleep disorders, shift work, etc. Sleep loss is accompanied by significant and apparent alterations in mood, alertness, and performance. Animal studies suggested that sleep is centrally important for survival, with especially strong implications for thermoregulation, energy balance, and immune function. But only limited data are available on the physiologic effects of chronic sleep loss and its consequences for health. A better understanding of effects of sleep deprivation will be necessary to reduce the risk associated with long term accumulation of sleep debt.
